# Understand your records

> Learn how accounts, contacts, opportunities, and activities fit together in Octolane.

Octolane uses a small set of connected records so conversation history, tasks, and deal context stay in one place.

**Time:** 3 minutes

**Outcome:** You can open any record and understand what you are looking at.

## The four records to know

| Record | Represents | Usually created from |
| - | - | - |
| **Account** | A company or organization | An external email domain, meeting, import, or manual creation |
| **Contact** | A person | An email participant, meeting attendee, import, or manual creation |
| **Opportunity** | A potential deal | Conversation signals, an import, AI Chat, or manual creation |
| **Task** | Work with an owner and due date | A person, a meeting action item, or AI Chat |

Emails, meetings, notes, and AI actions appear as **activities** on the relevant record timeline.

## Follow one relationship

**1. Open an account**

Choose a company you recognize and review its fields and recent activity.

**2. Open a related contact**

Confirm that the person, company, email history, and meetings are connected as expected.

**3. Open or create an opportunity**

Review its account, people, value, stage, close date, and activity timeline.

## Check your work

You should be able to move from an opportunity to its account and contacts without searching for the same conversation twice.
